Try with sample dataHow it works
Lots held more than one year produce long-term gains, taxed at 0%, 15% or 20% depending on your bracket; shorter holdings are taxed as ordinary income. Most brokers default to first in, first out, but let you pick specific lots before settlement.
If you sell at a loss and buy the same security within 30 days before or after, the wash-sale rule can disallow the loss and add it to the new shares' basis instead. State taxes and the net investment income tax are not included.
